Which burns more calories?

an hour on the treadmill going 4 miles per hour or an hour on the elliptical trainer going 6 miles per hour. This seems like a silly question perhaps, but it just seems when I'm on the treadmill that it is much harder work and I can't seem to push myself as hard because it hurts my heels and joints. When I'm on the elliptical trainer, I'm an animal and love to race and I don't feel any pain at all. But I was wondering if I'm burning as many or more calories when I'm on the elliptical.

I was once told that if you walk on the treadmill you can burn up to 300 calories for an hour. If you run, you'll burn the same amount of calories. So, the most important thing is to go farther by being comfortable, walk!
Speed is not the only consideration when it comes to burning calories. It is more about the amount of energy exerted through resistance. For example, you can 4 miles and hour on both the treadmill ad elliptical trainer, however, if one or the other provides better resistance, then you will burn more calories. I would count your calories on both a 1-hour workout on both machines and determine which one 'feels' better for you after the workout. Ultimately, you will stick to the one that you feel most comfortable doing. I like the movement required for the elliptical, so I am always more inclined to work on it.
